Notes
Series of magazine covers for La Casa Bella designed by Giuseppe Pagano-Pogatschnig and Gino Levi-Montalcini. In 1931 Pagano became editor of La Casa Bella, starting to introduce changes that will revolutionise the magazine, transforming it from a home and decoration periodical to a fundamental platform for architectural debate. For the covers, Pagano and Levi-Montalcini developed an extremely effective solution, featuring the repetition of the magazine’s title, arranged in an orderly geometric pattern against a background that changed colour on each issue. The title’s cast shadow suggested three-dimensionality, also bringing movement to the layout of the cover. Through the consistent repetition of the cover’s graphic design, the magazine achieved maximum recognisability, defining its identity in a bold way, also thanks to the Rationalist typeface. [NMM]
