Vignelli was given the assignment of redesigning the entire sign system of Ferrovie dello Stato (Italian National Railways). He lead to a major improvement of the previous system by developing an integrated typographic program, introducing Futura Bold as the only font for the signage, and using where possible a continuous information band in a similar way to that first used by Bob Noorda in the Milan Metro. While making the communication more clear, rational, and recognizable, he also achieved to develop his project in continuity with the previous system, for example keeping the blue backgrounds and then allowing the company to introduce the new signage while still having old signs in use.
